New York publishes an absurd amount of public data about your block. Construction permits, 311 complaints, street closures, collision reports, sanitation schedules, film permits etc. It's all there, but is scattered across the city’s OpenData platform which, candidly, can be a little intimidating for the casual user.
So I built a tool that lets you see your hyperlocal data all in one place. You can check it out at What's Happening on My Block?
Just type in an address, and it should spit out a brief on whats happening nearby - from street closures and traffic incidents to trash schedules and 311 complaints. Note that, the denser your neighborhood, the longer it will take to generate the brief but should be 60s< at the absolute most.
My longer-term goal here is to build a chat interface on top of all of the city data so that you can query any of it in natural language. That’s a ways off, but if anyone would like to fund it please do reach out!
As always, this project is open source. I’d call this about 70% done, and I welcome feedback on bugs you find or features you want. In the next week or so, I’ll add a custom boundary feature that should let you look at any defined area within the five boroughs - exciting stuff if you’re apartment hunting or are just deeply passionate about traffic safety.
